IMAGINING LIBERTY

  • 1 min read

Teachers College, Columbia University's Imagining Liberty Project explores how education and daily life evolved during the Revolutionary era and how those changes shaped the ideas ultimately expressed in the Declaration of Independence. Through podcasts, original research, and courses for educators, the project invites students, teachers, and the broader public to engage more deeply with the nation's history and its enduring challenges.

Directors of the Lounsbery Foundation supported this work through TC's 1776: Seedtime of American Education grant awarded in 2024. The grant supported the work of Dr. Thomas James and a team of Teachers College students to complete this innovative, multi-modal initiative in time for the commemoration of America's 250th anniversary.
